Tales of Power and Consequence…

It’s been a minute since I did any updates. Things are progressing, but mostly behind the scenes.

Almost all of the core mechanics of the TTRPG are ready to go. I just need to get it all jammed into the book, again. This is the… 3rd version, of the modern version, of the game. I had a lot of habits/baggage from my 90s game design following me around and it took a lot to let go of most of that.

I’ll post another update when there’s more to look at.

So, I should probably explain how we went from Imperium to “Shadows of Imperium.” Long story short, I’ve been searching for a good subtitle for a while now. I had been going with Schattenkrieg for a while, but it’s not entirely clear unless you know some German. Then I switched to Essence + Steel, which sounded cool, but kinda felt like a fantasy name more than sci-fi/fantasy. Then we had Parallax Front, which is not bad, but not clear as to its meaning.

I started poking around for other ideas and even considered renaming the whole project to avoid comparisons to a movie, very old space-war games, the Imperium Of Man, Twilight Imperium, etc. But I just couldn’t let go of the name I’ve been using since the 90s.

The compromise I came up with was an eyebrow headline for the title. I’m still going to call it Imperium. But officially it’s Shadows of Imperium.


I just hope no one thinks that it means “Shadow Agents of the Empire.” Because it’s supposed to mean “In the shadow/influence or power/authority.” Because there’s no empire… unless you count the Lacir, but they aren’t exactly into spycraft.

That’s enough perseverating for one night.
