Imperium is a tabletop RPG and novel series
This website is intended to provide an introduction to the setting of Imperium.
Imperium takes place in 585-632 PC. Humanity came close to the brink of extinction ~2400 years ago. The Anthropic Span encompasses a swath of the Perseus Arm and the Lower Orion Spur. Despite a tremendous effort to rebuild what was once lost, the current level of technology and expansion pales by comparison to the pre-collapse remnants found throughout the galaxy.
The universe is much more than what it would seem on the surface. There are deeper realms within reality. One of those, known as Hubspace, has made interstellar travel possible. Others contain many extraordinary elements.
Energy, known as the Flux, serves as a source of power that is harnessed for both magical and technological purposes.
Humanity shares the galaxy with several other alien species and various forms of altered humans.
- The Lacir are an ancient warlike species locked in a perpetual cold war with their former masters. They have been enigmatic allies of humanity since before recorded history. Their emissaries are welcomed, but sometimes bring ill tidings from regions outside human space.
- The Kyserians are one of the oldest known species in the galaxy. They created the Lacir in ages past, and uplifted the Morocaschics. Their entire civilization goes through eras of torpor that span millions of years. However, they have awakened again in modern times.
- The Morocaschics are a scattered species, existing throughout human space and beyond. They are natural shapeshifters and have infiltrated many worlds by imitating their local inhabitants. They were once enemies of humanity, but now their dwindling numbers have caused them to reevaluate their hostilities.
The human species is indomitable. In the early centuries, covetous empires rose and fell with infighting stymieing their progress. Later, waves of explorers rediscovered thousands of worlds. Some pre-collapse technology has been regained and old territory reclaimed. Yet, much was lost forever to the frozen wastes of the inner-galaxy.
Five powerful nations, the religious Isylorian Order, and dozens of massive corporations have risen to grip the reigns of humanity. Each seeking to steer their species towards their ideal vision of the future.
After two and a half millennia, humanity is finally on the cusp of reclaiming their position as a major player on the galactic stage. But their position is tenuous.
Deep in the whispered corners of reality, there is an underlying conflict known only to a scant few. Not a war between nations, corporations, or aliens, but of ideologies. Each faction is unconsciously vying to solidify their power over the galaxy. There is little evidence on the surface, but the machinations of the shadow war churn beneath the facade all the same.
